Acridine

Acridine is a nitrogen-containing aromatic compound with three fused rings. It is the parent structure of derivatives used in dyes, medicines, and chemical research.

Heterocyclic compound: A cyclic compound whose ring contains at least one atom other than carbon. Acridine belongs to this broad class because one ring atom is nitrogen.
Acridine basicity: The ability of acridine’s ring nitrogen to accept a proton, forming an acridinium ion. This describes how the ring nitrogen responds to acidic conditions.
Carl Gräbe: A German chemist known for research on organic dyes and the structural chemistry of aromatic compounds. Gräbe and Heinrich Caro isolated acridine from coal tar in the nineteenth century.
Acriflavine: A mixture of acridine dyes historically used as an antiseptic and in biological staining. Its antimicrobial and staining uses grew from acridine-based chemistry.

Heinrich Caro: A German chemist and industrial dye researcher who helped develop synthetic dyes. Caro collaborated with Gräbe in identifying acridine in coal tar.
Proflavine: A fluorescent acridine dye with antimicrobial activity, used historically as a topical antiseptic. It is a medicinally used acridine derivative that also binds nucleic acids.
Phenazine: A fused aromatic heterocycle with two nitrogen atoms in a three-ring framework. It shares acridine’s three-ring architecture but contains an additional nitrogen.
