Acrylic fiber

Acrylic fiber is a synthetic textile fiber made primarily from acrylonitrile polymers. Its wool-like warmth, light weight, and resistance to sunlight and moisture make it common in apparel and furnishings.

Polyacrylonitrile: A synthetic polymer composed mainly of repeating acrylonitrile units. It is the main polymer used to make acrylic textile fibers.
Knitwear: Clothing made by interlocking loops of yarn. Acrylic yarn is widely used in sweaters, hats, scarves, and other knitted garments.
Wool: A natural animal fiber composed primarily of keratin and obtained mainly from sheep. Acrylic often imitates wool’s warmth and hand while differing in origin and moisture behavior.
Synthetic fiber: A textile fiber manufactured from chemically synthesized polymers rather than natural biological materials. Acrylic is one major category within manufactured polymer fibers.
Wet spinning: A fiber-forming process in which a polymer solution is extruded into a coagulating liquid bath. Many acrylic fibers form as polymer solution solidifies in a chemical bath.
Faux fur: A textile designed to imitate animal fur using pile fibers attached to a backing. Acrylic fibers can form the long, soft pile used in many faux-fur fabrics.
Polyester: A family of synthetic polymers containing ester linkages, widely used in textile fibers. Polyester is another common synthetic fiber, with different moisture absorption and heat behavior.
Microplastics: Plastic particles smaller than five millimeters, including fibers shed from textiles. Acrylic garments can release persistent microfibers during washing and wear.
Dry spinning: A fiber-forming process in which solvent evaporates from extruded polymer solution to leave solid filaments. It is an alternative route for converting acrylic polymer solution into filaments.
Outdoor fabrics: Textiles designed to withstand sunlight, moisture, and other outdoor exposure. Acrylic’s lightfastness and weather resistance suit awnings and outdoor furnishings.
