Act of Abjuration

The 1581 declaration by the States General of the Netherlands that Philip II had forfeited sovereignty over the rebellious provinces. It rejected his rule and helped establish the Dutch Republic.

Dutch Revolt: The long rebellion of the Low Countries against Habsburg Spain, beginning in 1568 and leading to Dutch independence. The revolt created the political crisis that prompted the provinces to reject Philip II.
