Active transportation

Active transportation moves people from place to place using their physical effort, most commonly by walking, cycling, or using a wheelchair.

Walking: Moving on foot by placing one foot ahead of the other. The most widely available form of active transportation, used for both short trips and access to other modes.
Complete streets: Street designs that provide safe travel options for people walking, cycling, driving, and using transit. Their design allocates street space to active modes as well as motor vehicles.
Physical activity: Bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that increases energy expenditure. Walking and cycling for transport add physical activity to daily routines.
Automobile dependency: A pattern of land use and transport in which daily life depends heavily on private cars. Car-dependent places make walking and cycling difficult for routine journeys.
Bicycle commuting: Regular travel between home and work or school by bicycle. Cycling makes active transportation practical for longer daily journeys.
Protected bike lane: A bicycle lane separated from motor traffic by a physical barrier or buffer. Physical separation can reduce cyclists’ exposure to moving vehicles.
Cardiovascular health: The condition and functioning of the heart and blood vessels. Regular active travel can contribute to cardiovascular fitness and health.
Public transport: Shared passenger transport services available to the public, such as buses, trains, and trams. Transit carries people without their own physical effort and often complements active travel.
Wheelchair mobility: Movement using a manual or powered wheelchair. Manual wheelchair travel relies on physical effort and belongs in accessible active-mobility planning.
Traffic calming: Street-design measures that reduce vehicle speeds or discourage through traffic. Lower speeds can make walking and cycling safer and more comfortable.
