Knowra Activism Activism Activism is deliberate action to promote or resist social, political, economic, or environmental change, often through organizing, protest, advocacy, or direct action.
Social movement : A sustained, organized collective effort to promote or resist social change. Activism supplies the actions through which social movements pursue their goals.
Grassroots campaigning : Campaigning organized by local participants rather than directed primarily by established institutions. Local activist networks can build pressure from communities most affected by an issue.
Montgomery bus boycott : A 1955–1956 protest against racial segregation on Montgomery, Alabama's public buses. A sustained boycott linked local organizing to a legal challenge against segregation.
Community organizing : The process of building collective power among people who share a place or concern. It often develops the relationships and leadership that sustain activist campaigns.
Policy change : A change in the rules, priorities, or actions adopted by a government or institution. Campaigns often measure success by whether demands become formal decisions or rules.
Collective action : Coordinated action by multiple people pursuing a shared interest or goal. Activism depends on people coordinating efforts beyond isolated individual acts.
Boycott : A refusal to buy, use, or participate in something as a means of protest or pressure. Withholding participation can impose economic or reputational costs on a target.
Salt March : Mahatma Gandhi's 1930 march to the sea to protest British colonial control of salt production in India. The march turned resistance to a specific colonial law into a mass public campaign.
Advocacy : Public or private support for a cause, policy, or group, often directed toward decision-makers. Advocacy is a common activist method, but it can also occur without broader collective action.
Public opinion : The distribution of attitudes and beliefs held by a population on public issues. Activist messaging and protest can shift which views are visible or widely accepted.
