Actor-manager

An actor-manager is a performer who also directs or controls a theatre company and its productions, combining artistic leadership with business responsibility.

Theatre company: An organization that produces theatrical performances, often employing artists and managing venues or tours. It is the organization an actor-manager leads and shapes.
David Garrick: An eighteenth-century English actor and theatre manager celebrated for his performances and reforms at Drury Lane. He helped make performance and theatre leadership parts of a single public identity.
Lyceum Theatre: A London theatre associated with Henry Irving’s long tenure as actor-manager. It was the institutional base for Irving’s company and artistic leadership.
Theatre director: A person responsible for shaping the staging and interpretation of a theatrical production. Unlike an actor-manager, a director need not perform or control the producing company.

Stage direction: The creative guidance of performers and production elements in preparing a theatrical performance. Actor-managers may direct productions as well as perform in them.
Ellen Terry: A prominent English stage actor who performed for many years with Henry Irving’s Lyceum company. Her work illuminates the actor-manager’s relationship with leading company performers.
