Adamawa Emirate

The Adamawa Emirate is a Fulani-led polity founded in the nineteenth century during the jihad associated with Usman dan Fodio. It became an eastern emirate of the Sokoto Caliphate, spanning areas now in Nigeria and Cameroon.

Sokoto Jihad: A series of wars launched in 1804 by Usman dan Fodio and his followers, leading to the Sokoto Caliphate. The jihad supplied the political and religious movement from which Adamawa’s emirate was founded.
Emir: A ruler or governor in several Muslim societies, including the emirates of the Sokoto Caliphate. The emir governed Adamawa while recognizing the caliphate’s wider authority.
Lamido of Adamawa: The title of the ruler of the Adamawa Emirate. The title identifies the office through which the emirate’s ruling dynasty governed.
German Kamerun: The German colony established in 1884 over much of present-day Cameroon and adjacent territories. German expansion divided Adamawa’s lands and brought parts under colonial rule.
Usman dan Fodio: A Fulani Islamic scholar and reformer who led the early nineteenth-century jihad and founded the Sokoto Caliphate. His movement authorized the campaign that established Fulani rule in Adamawa.
Fulani aristocracy: The elite lineages and officeholders who held political authority in Fulani-led states. Its ruling families staffed the emirate’s highest offices.
Hamadou Djoumessi: A ruler of the Adamawa Emirate during the late nineteenth century. His reign belongs to the period when European powers pressed into the emirate’s territory.
British Northern Nigeria: A British protectorate established in 1900 over territories that are now part of northern Nigeria. British rule incorporated the emirate’s western areas into a colonial administration.
Modibbo Adama: A Fulani religious and military leader who founded the Adamawa Emirate in the early nineteenth century. He led the jihad in the region and became its first emir.
Islamic jurisprudence: The scholarly interpretation of Islamic law, developed through methods and legal traditions. Islamic legal scholarship informed the emirate’s courts and public authority.
