Addition

Addition is the arithmetic operation that combines quantities to produce a sum. It is commonly written with the plus sign and is one of the basic operations of arithmetic.

Addend: An addend is a number or quantity being added to another in a sum. Each quantity combined by addition is an addend.
Counting: Counting is assigning number words or symbols in sequence to objects or quantities. Counting forward from one addend provides a basic way to find a sum.
Arithmetic: Arithmetic is the branch of mathematics concerned with numbers and basic operations such as addition and multiplication. Addition is one of arithmetic’s foundational operations.
Subtraction: Subtraction is the arithmetic operation that finds the difference between quantities or removes one quantity from another. It reverses addition when the relevant numbers and operations are defined.
Sum: A sum is the result of adding two or more quantities. Addition names the operation; the sum is its result.
Place-value notation: Place-value notation represents a number using digits whose values depend on their positions. Column addition combines units of matching place value.
Integer: An integer is a whole number, positive, negative, or zero. Adding integers extends ordinary counting to signed quantities.
Multiplication: Multiplication is the operation that scales a quantity or combines equal-sized groups. Repeated addition can model multiplication by a nonnegative integer.
Plus sign: The plus sign (+) is the symbol commonly used to indicate addition. It marks the operation between addends in standard notation.
Carrying: Carrying is transferring a value from one place-value column to the next during arithmetic. It handles a column total that reaches the base of the number system.
