Administrative reform of Poland (1999)

A territorial and administrative reorganization effective 1 January 1999 that reduced Poland’s voivodeships from 49 to 16 and restored counties (powiaty) as an intermediate level of local government.

Voivodeship: A Polish territorial unit at the highest subnational level, governed by both elected regional authorities and a state-appointed voivode. The reform replaced 49 voivodeships with 16 larger regions.
