Adobe RGB color space

Adobe RGB (1998) is an RGB color space created by Adobe in 1998. Its wider gamut than sRGB captures more printable colors, especially in green and cyan.

RGB color model: A color model that represents colors as combinations of red, green, and blue channels. Adobe RGB uses three channels to encode colors through additive color mixing.
sRGB: A standardized RGB color space designed for consistent color reproduction across displays and the web. Its smaller gamut makes it the common compatibility alternative to Adobe RGB.
ICC profile: A standardized data file describing the color behavior of a device or color space. An ICC profile identifies Adobe RGB data so color-managed software can interpret it correctly.
Color space conversion: The transformation of color values from one defined color space into another. Adobe RGB images often need conversion before display or delivery in sRGB.
Color gamut: The range of colors that a device or color space can represent. Adobe RGB’s defining advantage is its broader range of representable colors than sRGB.
ProPhoto RGB: A very wide-gamut RGB color space designed to encompass nearly all colors visible to humans. It extends beyond Adobe RGB, especially for image editing with high-bit-depth data.
Digital photography: The capture and processing of images using electronic image sensors and digital files. Camera settings may encode photographs in Adobe RGB for later editing or print preparation.
Gamut mapping: Methods for adapting colors outside a target gamut to colors that the target can reproduce. Converting Adobe RGB to a narrower output space requires handling out-of-gamut colors.
CIE 1931 color space: A foundational model of human color vision that maps visible colors using tristimulus values. Its chromaticity diagram shows how Adobe RGB’s primaries delimit its gamut.
Display P3: A wide-gamut RGB color space using the DCI-P3 primaries and a D65 white point. It is a competing wide-gamut standard used by many modern displays and devices.
