Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld

Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld was a Finland-Swedish geologist and Arctic explorer who led the first successful navigation of the Northeast Passage in 1878–1879.

Vega Expedition: The 1878–1880 expedition that sailed the Northeast Passage aboard the ship Vega and wintered near the Chukchi Peninsula. Nordenskiöld commanded this expedition, completing the passage and returning to Europe in 1880.
Arctic sea ice: Sea ice that forms and melts seasonally in the Arctic Ocean and its surrounding waters. Ice blocked the Vega's route near the Chukchi Peninsula until the following summer.
Oscar Dickson: A Swedish industrialist and philanthropist who financed scientific and Arctic expeditions. He helped fund Nordenskiöld's major Arctic voyages, including the Vega Expedition.
