Advection

Advection is the transport of a quantity by the bulk motion of a fluid. It carries properties such as heat, moisture, or pollutants along with the moving fluid.

Advection equation: A partial differential equation describing how a quantity changes as it is carried by a velocity field. It expresses advection mathematically through the quantity’s rate of change and the fluid velocity.
Atmospheric advection: The transport of atmospheric properties by the large-scale motion of air. It carries temperature and moisture between regions, shaping weather systems.
Fluid mechanics: The study of fluids and the forces and motions that govern them. Advection depends on the motion of liquids and gases described by fluid mechanics.
Conduction: The transfer of heat through microscopic interactions without bulk movement of matter. Conduction can move heat through a fluid even when advection is absent.
Material derivative: The rate of change of a property following a moving fluid parcel. It combines local change with change caused by transport through spatial gradients.
Ocean circulation: The large-scale movement of seawater through ocean basins and between the surface and deep ocean. Ocean currents advect heat, salt, nutrients, and dissolved substances over long distances.
Scalar field: A quantity that assigns a single numerical value to every point in space and time. Temperature and concentration are common scalar quantities carried by a fluid.
Turbulent diffusion: The effective spreading of quantities caused by irregular turbulent motions. It represents mixing by fluctuating flow, distinct from transport by the mean bulk motion.
Velocity field: A specification of a fluid's velocity at each point in space and time. Its direction and magnitude determine where and how quickly a quantity is carried.
Pollutant dispersion: The spreading and movement of pollutants through air, water, or soil. Advection transports contaminants with the surrounding fluid, alongside mixing and diffusion.
