Adventitious root

An adventitious root develops from a stem, leaf, or other non-root tissue rather than from another root. It can support a plant, absorb water and nutrients, or enable vegetative reproduction.

Root primordium: A cluster of cells that develops into a new root. Adventitious roots begin when competent cells form a root primordium.
Stem cutting: A plant propagation method using a severed stem section to grow a new plant. Cuttings commonly rely on adventitious roots to establish independently.
Root: A plant organ that typically anchors the plant and absorbs water and minerals. Adventitious roots are defined by where a root develops, not by a different basic organ identity.
Prop roots: Roots that grow from a stem or branch and descend to the ground for support. They are conspicuous adventitious roots that stabilize large branches.
Auxin: A plant hormone that regulates growth and developmental patterning. Auxin helps induce adventitious root initiation and growth.
Air layering: A propagation method that induces roots on a stem while it remains attached to the parent plant. The method deliberately induces adventitious roots before separating the stem.
Plant stem: The plant axis that bears leaves and buds and transports materials between roots and shoots. Stem tissues are a common source of adventitious roots.
Pneumatophore: A specialized root that projects above waterlogged soil and aids gas exchange. Some mangroves produce these specialized adventitious roots in oxygen-poor mud.
Wound-induced rooting: Root formation triggered by tissue injury or cutting. Cut stems often form adventitious roots as part of wound responses.
Aerial root: A root that grows above ground from a plant stem or branch. Many aerial roots are adventitious and help anchor or support climbing plants.
