Adze

An adze is a cutting tool with a blade set perpendicular to its handle, used chiefly to shape and smooth wood. Its edge cuts across the direction of the handle’s swing.

Adze blade: The cutting part of an adze, mounted across the handle’s axis. Its transverse edge distinguishes the adze’s cut from an axe’s.
Axe: A bladed tool with its cutting edge generally parallel to the handle. An axe chops with a different edge orientation than an adze.
Timber framing: A building method using a framework of joined timbers. An adze can flatten and fit timber surfaces during frame construction.
Stone Age: The prehistoric period when stone was the principal material for tools. Stone adzes were among the woodworking tools used before metalworking.

Neolithic: The later phase of the Stone Age, associated in many regions with farming and polished stone tools. Polished stone adzes became widespread in many Neolithic societies.
Woodworking: The craft of shaping, joining, and finishing wood. Adzes are hand tools for shaping and smoothing wooden surfaces.
Drawknife: A woodworking tool with a blade and two handles, pulled toward the user. A drawknife shapes wood by pulling its edge rather than swinging a transverse blade.
