Knowra Aedes aegypti Aedes aegypti Aedes aegypti is a mosquito species native to Africa and now established in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Females bite humans and transmit viruses including dengue, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya.
Arbovirus : A virus transmitted to vertebrates by arthropods such as mosquitoes or ticks. Dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya belong to this broad group transmitted by the mosquito.
Source reduction : Mosquito control that removes or manages water-holding sites where larvae develop. Emptying, covering, or cleaning containers directly removes common Aedes aegypti breeding sites.
Dengue : A mosquito-borne viral disease that ranges from mild fever to life-threatening severe dengue. Aedes aegypti drives much urban dengue transmission, especially where people and breeding sites are dense.
Aedes aegypti formosus : The darker, largely forest-associated subspecies of Aedes aegypti native to sub-Saharan Africa. It is closely associated with the ancestral African populations from which domestic forms arose.
Insecticide resistance : The inherited ability of a pest population to survive doses of an insecticide that once controlled it. Resistance in Aedes aegypti can weaken chemical control and complicate outbreak response.
Mosquito bite : A mosquito's feeding puncture, through which it takes blood and may transmit pathogens. Aedes aegypti females acquire viruses from infected hosts and can pass them on during later bites.
Insecticide-treated net : A bed net treated with insecticide to kill or repel mosquitoes contacting it. This intervention is less suited to a mosquito that bites mainly during daylight hours.
Yellow fever : A viral disease that can cause fever, jaundice, bleeding, and organ failure. Aedes aegypti transmits yellow fever in urban cycles involving humans.
Aedes aegypti aegypti : The pale, human-associated subspecies of Aedes aegypti found widely beyond its African origin. This domestic form is adapted to human environments and accounts for much global disease transmission.
Gene drive : A genetic system that biases inheritance so a chosen trait spreads through a population faster than ordinary inheritance predicts. Proposed mosquito gene drives could alter or suppress Aedes aegypti, but ecological and governance questions remain.
