Aerial insectivore

An animal that catches and eats insects in flight. Aerial insectivory is a feeding strategy found in several unrelated animal groups.

Hawking (feeding behavior): A feeding behavior in which an animal launches from a perch to catch flying prey and often returns. Flycatchers use this perch-and-return pursuit to capture insects in flight.
Insectivore: An animal whose diet consists primarily or entirely of insects. Aerial insectivores are insectivores distinguished by catching prey in flight.
Biological pest control: The use of living organisms to suppress pest populations. Bats and birds consume insects that include agricultural and public-health pests.
Swallow: A passerine bird in the family Hirundinidae, typically adapted for agile flight and aerial feeding. Swallows are familiar aerial insectivores that catch prey while flying.
Echolocation: Biological sensing that uses reflected sound waves to locate objects or navigate. Many bats use echoes to detect and track insects in darkness.
Insect: An arthropod with a three-part body, six legs, and usually one or two pairs of wings. Flying insects make up the prey targeted by aerial insectivores.
Insect migration: The regular, directional movement of insects between regions or habitats. Migrating insects can provide abundant prey for aerial predators.
Swift: A fast-flying bird in the family Apodidae, many species of which feed on airborne insects. Swifts spend much of their active time pursuing insects aloft.
Wing loading: The ratio of an animal’s weight to its wing area, influencing flight speed and maneuverability. Low wing loading can help aerial insectivores maneuver while pursuing prey.
Predation: An interaction in which one organism kills and consumes another. Aerial insectivory is predation on insects captured during flight.
