Aesop

Aesop is an ancient Greek storyteller traditionally credited with a collection of brief fables, many of which use animal characters to convey a moral.

Aesop's Fables: A collection of short moral tales traditionally attributed to Aesop, transmitted and adapted over centuries. This body of stories is the work most closely associated with Aesop.
Life of Aesop: A fictionalized ancient biography that portrays Aesop as an enslaved storyteller who wins freedom through wit. It is the fullest ancient narrative about Aesop, though it is not reliable biography.
Jean de La Fontaine: A French poet whose seventeenth-century verse fables adapted Aesopic and other traditional tales. His fables renewed Aesop’s stories for French literature and European readers.
Hesiod: An ancient Greek poet traditionally credited with the didactic poems Works and Days and Theogony. His moralizing poetry offers a named authorial tradition unlike the uncertain authorship of Aesop’s collection.
Fable: A short narrative that conveys a moral, often through animal characters acting like people. Aesop’s stories became a defining body of this narrative form.
Babrius: A Greek poet of the Roman era who recast Aesopic fables in verse. His poems show how fables attributed to Aesop circulated long after the storyteller’s supposed lifetime.
Illustrated Aesop: The tradition of printing Aesop’s fables with images that interpret their characters and lessons. Illustrations made the animal plots of Aesopic tales especially accessible to young audiences.
Panchatantra: An ancient Indian collection of interlinked animal fables and political tales. It offers a distinct literary tradition of animal storytelling, not a work attributed to Aesop.
Moral: A lesson about right conduct or judgment, stated explicitly or implied by a story. Many fables attributed to Aesop end by drawing a lesson from the plot.
Phaedrus: A Roman fabulist who adapted Greek fables into Latin verse in the first century CE. His collection carried Aesopic material into Roman literary culture.
