Aesop's Fables

A traditional collection of brief stories, many featuring animals, that convey moral lessons and are attributed to the ancient Greek storyteller Aesop.

Fable: A short fictional narrative that conveys a moral, often through personified animals. Aesop's stories are among the best-known examples of this narrative form.
The Tortoise and the Hare: A fable in which a steady tortoise defeats a boastful hare in a race. Its contrast between persistence and overconfidence captures a recurring fable pattern.
Phaedrus: A Roman poet of the first century CE who rendered fables into Latin verse. His surviving versions preserve stories associated with the Aesopic tradition.
Aphorism: A concise statement that expresses a general truth or principle. Some fables survive in memory through a compact moral resembling an aphorism.
Aesop: An ancient Greek storyteller to whom a famous body of fables is attributed. His name became attached to the collection despite uncertainty about his life and authorship.
The Fox and the Grapes: A fable in which a fox dismisses grapes it cannot reach as sour. The story gives the name to a familiar pattern of devaluing what remains unattainable.
Babrius: A Greek poet, probably active in the first or second century CE, who recast fables in verse. His collection is a major witness to Greek-language Aesopic storytelling.
Satire: A mode of criticism that uses wit, irony, or exaggeration to expose faults. Animal behavior can indirectly expose human folly and abuses of power.
Personification: A figure of speech that gives human qualities or actions to nonhuman beings or objects. Animals in these stories often speak and behave like people.
The Boy Who Cried Wolf: A fable about a shepherd boy whose repeated false alarms leave villagers unwilling to help. It illustrates how deception can destroy trust when help is genuinely needed.
