Aesthetic education

Aesthetic education is the idea that engagement with art can cultivate human capacities and reconcile sensory impulse with rational thought. It is especially associated with Friedrich Schiller’s account of aesthetic experience as a means of human freedom.

Friedrich Schiller: Friedrich Schiller was a German poet, playwright, historian, and philosopher whose writings linked aesthetic experience with human freedom. His Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man gave this idea its best-known philosophical formulation.
Drive theory (Schiller): Schiller’s account of human nature distinguishes a sense drive oriented toward change and sensation from a form drive oriented toward order. These opposing drives explain the tension aesthetic education is meant to reconcile.
Aesthetics: Aesthetics is the philosophical study of beauty, art, taste, and aesthetic experience. Aesthetic education develops a theory of what aesthetic experience can do to human beings.
John Dewey: John Dewey was an American philosopher and educator who connected learning, democracy, and experience. His account of art as experience offers a later pragmatist route to art’s formative effects.
Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man: A series of philosophical letters in which Friedrich Schiller argues that aesthetic experience can reconcile human capacities and support freedom. This work sets out the central argument behind aesthetic education.
Play drive: In Schiller’s philosophy, the play drive unites the sense drive and form drive in free aesthetic activity. It names the capacity through which aesthetic experience brings impulse and reason into balance.
Aesthetic judgment: Aesthetic judgment evaluates an object through a response such as beauty or sublimity rather than through a determinate concept alone. Schiller’s argument builds on the distinctive freedom and non-instrumentality of aesthetic judgment.
Herbert Read: Herbert Read was a British poet and art critic who argued for education through art. He made aesthetic development a central aim of educational practice.
French Revolution: The French Revolution was a period of political upheaval beginning in 1789 that ended the French monarchy and reshaped European politics. Schiller’s account responds to the gap between revolutionary ideals of freedom and political violence.
Aesthetic state: The aesthetic state is Schiller’s condition of openness in which neither sensation nor rational form dominates the person. It describes the freedom that aesthetic education seeks to make possible.
