Aesthetic experience

An attentive encounter with the perceptual or expressive qualities of an object, event, or work. It can involve pleasure, emotion, interpretation, or focused perception without requiring all of them.

Aesthetic attitude: A mode of attention that treats an object or event as an occasion for aesthetic appreciation. It describes the orientation that can make an encounter aesthetic rather than merely practical.
Aesthetic attention: Focused attention to perceptual or expressive features for their aesthetic significance. It isolates the attentive component that distinguishes many aesthetic encounters.
Aesthetic formalism: The view that an artwork’s aesthetic value depends primarily on its perceptible form and internal relations. Formalism privileges features of the object, unlike accounts centered on the experiencer’s stance.

Perception: The organization and interpretation of sensory information by a perceiving organism. Aesthetic experience depends on perception but can direct it toward qualities usually overlooked.
Aesthetic cognitivism: The view that art can provide knowledge or understanding through its aesthetic and expressive features. Cognitivism challenges accounts that separate aesthetic experience from learning and understanding.
Music listening: The perception and interpretation of organized sound, whether focused or incidental. Listening shows how aesthetic experience can unfold over time through sound and expectation.
Aesthetic pleasure: Pleasure arising from perceiving, imagining, or contemplating qualities considered aesthetically significant. Pleasure is a familiar response, though not a necessary ingredient of every aesthetic encounter.
Multistability: The capacity of an ambiguous image or stimulus to support multiple distinct perceptual organizations. Shifts between perceptual readings can make attention itself part of the experience.
