Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten : An eighteenth-century German philosopher who established aesthetics as a discipline concerned with sensory cognition. He gave the emerging discipline its name and defined its early scope.
Objectivism (aesthetics) : The view that aesthetic properties or values belong to objects independently of individual preference. It contrasts with explanations that locate aesthetic value chiefly in personal response.
Philosophy of art : The branch of philosophy that examines art’s nature, meaning, interpretation, value, and relation to other human activities. It applies aesthetic questions specifically to artworks and artistic practice.
Aesthetic judgment : An evaluation of an object’s beauty, artistic merit, or other aesthetic qualities. It raises the question of how aesthetic evaluations can be justified.
Imagination : The capacity to form, alter, and combine representations beyond immediate perception. Aesthetic experience often depends on imagining meanings and possibilities beyond what is directly present.
Enlightenment : An intellectual movement emphasizing reason, criticism, and inquiry that shaped European thought in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Its debates about reason and sensibility formed the setting for modern aesthetics.
Subjectivism (aesthetics) : The view that aesthetic judgments depend primarily on an individual’s responses or preferences. It challenges the idea that aesthetic standards hold independently of observers.
Environmental aesthetics : The philosophical study of aesthetic experience of natural and built environments. It extends aesthetic inquiry beyond artworks to landscapes, cities, and ordinary surroundings.
