Æthelred the Unready

Æthelred the Unready was king of England from 978 to 1013 and again from 1014 to 1016. His reign was marked by Viking attacks and ended during the Danish conquest of England.

Danegeld: A tribute paid by English rulers to Viking armies to secure peace or their withdrawal. Æthelred’s government repeatedly raised this payment to deter attacks, without ending them.
Edward the Martyr: King of England from 975 until his murder in 978, later venerated as a saint. Æthelred became king after Edward’s killing, amid suspicion and political division.

Treaty of Alfred and Guthrum: A settlement between Alfred the Great and the Viking leader Guthrum that defined boundaries and legal relations. It offers an earlier example of formalizing coexistence with Viking forces, unlike Æthelred’s repeated emergency payments.
Ælfthryth: Queen of England and wife of Edgar the Peaceful, and mother of Æthelred. Her son’s accession followed the violent end of her stepson Edward’s reign.
