Afar Depression

The Afar Depression is a low-lying tectonic region in northeastern Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti where the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and East African rift systems meet.

Triple junction: A point or zone where three tectonic plate boundaries meet. Afar is a rare land-based example where three active rift arms converge.
Arabian Plate: A tectonic plate that includes the Arabian Peninsula and adjacent seafloor. Its motion away from Africa helps drive extension across Afar.
Erta Ale: A basaltic shield volcano in Ethiopia’s Afar Region, known for a persistent lava lake. Its lava lake reveals active magma processes within the Afar rift.
Pangaea: A supercontinent that assembled most of Earth’s landmasses during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras. Its breakup set the long-term plate motions that shaped the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Magma intrusion: The injection of molten rock into fractures or layers within Earth’s crust. Intrusions accommodate much of the rapid extension measured in Afar’s active rifts.
Continental rifting: The process by which tectonic forces stretch and thin continental lithosphere. This process is separating the crust beneath Afar into distinct plate-boundary systems.
Somali Plate: The tectonic plate containing eastern Africa and the western Indian Ocean floor. Its separation from the Nubian Plate is expressed in the East African rift near Afar.
Dallol: A hydrothermal volcanic area in Ethiopia’s Danakil Depression, marked by acidic brines and mineral deposits. Its extreme landscape shows how volcanism and evaporating brines shape parts of Afar.
Red Sea: A seawater inlet between northeastern Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Its opening records the separation of Arabia from Africa north of Afar.
Dyke (geology): A sheet-like body of igneous rock formed when magma cuts across pre-existing rock layers. Dykes are the subsurface structures that opened during Afar’s 2005 rifting episode.
