Afar people

The Afar are a Cushitic-speaking people living mainly in Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti. Many have historically practiced pastoralism in the Horn of Africa’s arid lowlands.

Afar language: A Cushitic language spoken by the Afar people in Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti. It is the Afar people's principal shared language and a marker of cultural identity.
Sultanate of Aussa: A historical Afar polity centered on Aussa in the Awash River basin. It was a major center of Afar political authority.
Salt trade: The exchange and transport of salt as a commodity between producers and markets. Afar salt extraction and caravan trade linked Danakil lowlands with Ethiopian highland markets.
French Somaliland: The French colonial territory that became the Republic of Djibouti in 1977. Colonial rule helped shape the borders separating Afar communities across the region.
Cushitic languages: A branch of the Afroasiatic language family spoken mainly in the Horn of Africa and nearby regions. Afar belongs to this broader language family.
Sultan Hanfere Alimirah: An Afar sultan who led the Sultanate of Aussa during much of the twentieth century. His rule connected traditional authority with changing Ethiopian state politics.
Lake Afrera: A saline lake in Ethiopia's Afar Region, known for salt production. Its salt flats support a long-standing Afar economic activity.
Italian Eritrea: The Italian colony established in Eritrea in the late nineteenth century and lasting until 1941. Its boundaries placed Afar communities under a colonial administration distinct from neighboring areas.
Horn of Africa: The northeastern African region encompassing Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia. Afar communities span several countries in this region.
Afar Liberation Front: A political and armed movement advocating Afar self-determination in Ethiopia. It represents one modern strand of Afar political mobilization.
