Afar Triple Junction

The tectonic junction in Ethiopia where the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and East African Rift meet. It is a rare continental setting where three divergent plate boundaries converge.

Red Sea Rift: A divergent plate boundary where the African and Arabian plates move apart beneath the Red Sea. Its northern branch connects the junction to seafloor spreading in the Red Sea.
African Plate: A major tectonic plate that carries most of Africa and adjacent ocean floor. Its northeastern margin participates in the Red Sea and East African rift systems.
