Afonso I of Kongo

Afonso I ruled the Kingdom of Kongo from about 1509 to 1542. His reign brought Christianity into Kongo’s royal court and produced extensive correspondence with Portuguese monarchs.

João I of Kongo: The ruler of Kongo who reigned before Afonso I and converted to Christianity during Portuguese contact. Afonso succeeded this ruler, whose conversion began the royal court’s Christian connection.
