Afonso I of Portugal

Afonso I was Portugal’s first king, ruling from 1139 to 1185. He secured the kingdom’s independence from León and expanded its territory southward.

County of Portugal: A medieval county in the northwest Iberian Peninsula that became the foundation of the kingdom of Portugal. Afonso inherited this county and transformed it into a kingdom.
Battle of Ourique: A 1139 battle in which Afonso Henriques defeated a Muslim force in southern Portugal. Later tradition linked this victory to his assumption of the title king.
