Afonso III of Portugal

Afonso III ruled Portugal from 1248 to 1279, completing the conquest of the Algarve and consolidating royal authority and the kingdom’s southern frontier.

Conquest of the Algarve: The thirteenth-century campaign by Portugal to bring the Algarve under Christian rule. Afonso’s forces completed this conquest, extending Portuguese rule to the southern coast.
Sancho II of Portugal: King of Portugal from 1223 to 1248, whose contested rule ended with his removal from power. Afonso succeeded his brother after nobles and church leaders opposed Sancho’s government.
