African Association

The African Association was a British organization founded in 1788 to promote the exploration of Africa, especially its interior and the course of the Niger River.

Joseph Banks: Joseph Banks was an English naturalist and patron of science who influenced British scientific institutions. Banks helped establish the Association and shaped its early scientific ambitions.
Mungo Park: Mungo Park was a Scottish surgeon and explorer who traveled to the Niger River in 1795–1797 and 1805. The Association sponsored Park, whose published account made him its best-known explorer.
Royal Geographical Society: The Royal Geographical Society is a British learned society founded in 1830 to advance geographical knowledge. It later inherited much of the Association’s role in organizing British geographical exploration.
Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa: Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa is Mungo Park’s 1799 account of his first journey to the Niger. Park’s book became the Association’s most influential public record of exploration.
Sir John Sinclair: Sir John Sinclair was a Scottish politician and agricultural improver who founded the British Board of Agriculture. Sinclair proposed the Association’s formation in 1788.
Daniel Houghton: Daniel Houghton was an Irish officer and explorer sent to West Africa in 1790 to find the Niger River. The Association’s expedition ended with Houghton’s disappearance in the interior.
African Association expedition to the Niger: The African Association’s Niger expeditions were journeys sponsored to locate and describe the river and its surroundings. These expeditions translated the Association’s aims into specific routes and field reports.
Scramble for Africa: The Scramble for Africa was the late nineteenth-century partition and colonization of most of Africa by European powers. The Association predated the partition but helped normalize European claims to geographic knowledge of Africa.
Royal Society: The Royal Society is a British learned society founded in 1660 to promote scientific knowledge. Its scientific networks and members helped provide institutional support for the Association.
James Rennell: James Rennell was a British geographer and cartographer known for mapping India and studying African geography. Rennell interpreted explorers’ reports and helped guide the Association’s geographic research.
