African historiography

African historiography is the study of how Africa’s past has been researched, interpreted, and written. It examines historical methods, evidence, and the changing perspectives that shape accounts of the continent.

Colonial historiography: Historical writing shaped by colonial rule and its assumptions about the societies it describes. Many early European accounts of Africa framed its past through colonial power and racial hierarchies.
Oral history: The collection and study of spoken testimony as evidence about the past. Interviews and remembered experience complement written archives in African historical research.
Joseph Ki-Zerbo: A Burkinabè historian who helped build African historical institutions and authored a major history of the continent. He helped organize African scholars’ efforts to write the continent’s history on their own terms.
Eurocentrism: A perspective that treats European history, values, or experience as the primary standard for understanding the world. African historians have challenged accounts that measure African societies against European trajectories.
Slavery in Africa: The varied systems of enslavement and slave trading that existed within Africa and connected it to wider markets. Its histories require distinguishing local institutions from Atlantic and Indian Ocean systems.
African nationalism: Political movements that sought African self-determination and independence from colonial rule. Nationalist historians reclaimed African agency and used the past to support independence.
Oral tradition: Knowledge and narratives transmitted across generations through speech, performance, and memory. Traditions preserved histories where written records were scarce or inaccessible.
UNESCO General History of Africa: A multivolume project, begun in 1964, to synthesize African history with substantial participation by African scholars. It became a landmark effort to produce a continent-wide history beyond colonial narratives.
Afrocentrism: An intellectual perspective that centers African peoples and histories in the study of world civilization. It counters Eurocentric framing, while prompting debate about evidence and historical interpretation.
Trans-Saharan slave trade: The long-running movement of enslaved people across the Sahara and into North Africa and beyond. Its scale, chronology, and regional effects remain difficult to reconstruct from uneven sources.
