African Plate

The African Plate is a major tectonic plate carrying most of Africa and parts of the surrounding Atlantic and Indian Ocean floors. It is slowly splitting along the East African Rift.

East African Rift: A zone of active continental rifting extending through eastern Africa toward the Afar region. Rifting within the plate may eventually divide its eastern portion from the rest.
Lithosphere: Earth’s rigid outer layer, consisting of the crust and the uppermost mantle. The African Plate is a moving section of this outer shell.
Gondwana: An ancient southern supercontinent that included Africa, South America, Antarctica, Australia, and India. Africa and its adjoining lithosphere were part of this larger landmass before it fragmented.
African Rift Valley: A system of valleys and faults formed by extension across eastern Africa. Its active faults and volcanism mark deformation within the plate system.
Eurasian Plate: A major tectonic plate carrying most of Europe and much of Asia. Its convergence with the African Plate drives deformation around the Mediterranean.
Afar Triple Junction: A region where the Red Sea Rift, Gulf of Aden Rift, and East African Rift meet. Three divergent plate boundaries converge near the plate’s northeastern margin.
Plate Tectonics: The scientific theory that Earth’s lithosphere is divided into moving plates. It provides the framework for explaining the African Plate’s boundaries and motion.
Pangaea: A supercontinent that assembled most of Earth’s continental crust during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras. The African Plate’s older continental core formed within this earlier global configuration.
Atlas Mountains: A mountain range spanning northwestern Africa, formed through complex convergence and deformation near the African–Eurasian boundary. Their uplift records interaction along the plate’s northern margin.
South American Plate: A tectonic plate carrying South America and adjacent Atlantic Ocean floor. It diverges from the African Plate across the South Atlantic.
