Organization of African Unity : The intergovernmental organization founded in 1963 that preceded the African Union. The Union replaced it in 2002, building on its unity project while broadening continental institutions.
Muammar Gaddafi : Libya’s leader from 1969 to 2011, who promoted a more politically unified Africa and backed the Union’s creation. His campaign helped push African leaders toward replacing the OAU with the Union.
African Union Mission in Sudan : An African Union peacekeeping mission deployed in Sudan’s Darfur region from 2004 to 2007. It demonstrated the Union’s early use of field missions to protect civilians and monitor conflict.
African Union passport : A travel document introduced by the African Union for eligible officials, intended to support continent-wide free movement. It embodies the Union’s goal of making movement across Africa easier.
