Afrikaners

Afrikaners are a South African ethnocultural group shaped by Afrikaans language, diverse ancestry, and a shared history rooted in Dutch colonial settlement at the Cape.

Dutch Cape Colony: A Dutch East India Company settlement at the Cape of Good Hope from 1652 to 1795. Its colonial society supplied the earliest foundations of Afrikaner language and identity.
Afrikaans: A West Germanic language that developed in southern Africa, chiefly from Dutch, with influences from other languages. It became the principal language associated with Afrikaner communities.
National Party (South Africa): A South African political party that governed from 1948 to 1994 and formalized apartheid. Its Afrikaner-led governments used state power to implement apartheid.
Paul Kruger: A Boer political leader who served as president of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900. His leadership made him a lasting symbol of nineteenth-century Boer independence.
Dutch East India Company: A Dutch chartered company that controlled trade and established colonies from 1602 to 1799. It founded the Cape settlement that brought Dutch-speaking settlers to southern Africa.
Cape Dutch: The varieties of Dutch spoken at the Cape that contributed to the development of Afrikaans. Cape Dutch provides a linguistic link between colonial settlers and modern Afrikaans.
Apartheid: A system of racial segregation and white minority rule enforced by South Africa’s government from 1948 to the early 1990s. Afrikaner nationalist governments institutionalized this system, though Afrikaners were not politically uniform.
J. B. M. Hertzog: A South African general and politician who served as prime minister from 1924 to 1939. He advanced Afrikaans language rights and Afrikaner political interests.
French Huguenots: French Protestants, many of whom fled persecution and settled abroad in the seventeenth century. Huguenot refugees at the Cape contributed to the settler population and its developing language.
Cape Coloured people: A diverse South African community with historical roots in Indigenous, enslaved, European, and other populations of the Cape. Shared language and intertwined histories distinguish cultural proximity from identical group identities.
