Afroasiatic languages

Afroasiatic is a language family spoken across North Africa, the Horn of Africa, and parts of West Asia. Its branches include Semitic, Berber, Cushitic, Chadic, Egyptian, and Omotic.

Semitic languages: A major Afroasiatic branch that includes Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, and Amharic. Its widespread languages make this the family’s most familiar branch.
Root-and-pattern morphology: A word-building system in which consonantal roots combine with vocalic patterns and affixes to form related words. This morphology is especially prominent in several Semitic languages.
Proto-Afroasiatic language: The reconstructed common ancestor from which Afroasiatic languages are hypothesized to descend. Its sound system and homeland are debated because the family’s branches are widely dispersed.
Arabic: A Semitic language with a large array of spoken varieties and a standardized literary form. Arabic is the family’s most widely spoken language and spans many national settings.
Afroasiatic homeland: The proposed ancestral region where Proto-Afroasiatic may have been spoken before its branches dispersed. Researchers disagree over its location, with proposals spanning parts of Africa and West Asia.
Berber languages: An Afroasiatic branch spoken by Amazigh communities across North Africa and parts of the Sahara. Berber extends the family across the Maghreb and Sahara.
Triconsonantal root: A consonantal root consisting of three consonants, common in Semitic word formation. Many Semitic word families are organized around three-consonant roots.
Historical linguistics: The study of how languages change and how they are related through time. Afroasiatic classification depends on reconstructing change across its branches.
Hebrew: A Semitic language used historically in Jewish writing and revived as a modern spoken language. Hebrew shows how a language can regain everyday speech after long literary use.
Omotic classification: The debate over whether Omotic forms a branch of Afroasiatic or belongs to another language family. Its status affects how Afroasiatic’s internal family tree is drawn.
