Afrofuturism

Afrofuturism is a cultural movement that uses African diasporic histories and cultures to imagine speculative futures, often through art, music, literature, and technology.

Black Atlantic: A framework for understanding cultural exchange and identity shaped by the transatlantic slave trade and its diasporas. Afrofuturism draws on cultures formed through these histories of displacement and exchange.
Sun Ra: An American jazz composer and bandleader who built an interstellar mythology around his music and public persona. His cosmic identity and performances became a foundational Afrofuturist model.
Mark Dery: An American cultural critic who coined the term “Afrofuturism” in a 1994 essay. His essay gave a name to cultural practices that predated the label.
Science fiction: A genre that explores imagined worlds and possibilities shaped by science, technology, or social change. Afrofuturism adapts speculative conventions to Black histories and futures.
Afrosurrealism: An artistic approach that combines Black cultural experience with surreal, dreamlike, or uncanny forms. It shares Afrofuturism’s cultural grounding but often emphasizes the surreal present over speculative futures.
Racialization: The social process through which people are assigned racial categories and those categories acquire meaning and consequences. Afrofuturist works expose how race shapes access to imagined futures.
Parable of the Sower: A 1993 novel by Octavia E. Butler about a young Black woman surviving social collapse and founding a new belief system. Butler imagines Black survival and community amid a near-future American crisis.
Alondra Nelson: An American sociologist whose scholarship helped develop Afrofuturism as a field of cultural and social inquiry. Her work connected the movement’s art to Black identity, science, and technology.
Speculative fiction: Fiction that imagines realities differing from the known world through altered conditions or possibilities. Its broad forms let Afrofuturist works rethink history as well as the future.
Afropessimism: A theoretical approach that analyzes anti-Blackness as a foundational structure of modern social life. Its account of structural limits contrasts with Afrofuturism’s frequent projection of alternative futures.
