Afsharid Iran

An Iranian monarchy ruled by the Afsharid dynasty, founded by Nader Shah in 1736 and lasting until 1796. It emerged from the collapse of Safavid rule and became a military empire under Nader.

Safavid Iran: An Iranian empire ruled by the Safavid dynasty from 1501 to 1736, which established Twelver Shiism as Iran’s state religion. Its weakening and final collapse created the political opening for Afsharid rule.
Battle of Damghan: A 1729 battle in which Nader’s forces defeated the Hotaki army in northeastern Iran. The victory secured Nader’s emergence as the leading military power in Iran.
Tahmasp II: A Safavid shah who ruled from 1722 to 1732 and relied on Nader to recover territory from Afghan forces. Nader served as his commander before replacing him with Tahmasp’s infant son.
Sack of Delhi (1739): The 1739 plunder of Delhi by Nader Shah’s army after its defeat of the Mughal Empire. The sack demonstrated the scale of Afsharid power and removed wealth from the Mughal capital.
Fall of Isfahan: The 1722 capture of Isfahan by Afghan forces, which ended effective Safavid control of the Iranian capital. The siege exposed the weakness that Nader Shah later exploited to restore central rule.
Battle of Karnal: A 1739 battle in which Nader Shah defeated the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah near Delhi. The victory opened Delhi to Nader’s invasion and brought immense wealth to his treasury.
Abbas III: The Safavid child shah installed by Nader in 1732, whose reign ended when Nader took the throne in 1736. His deposition marked the transition from Safavid restoration to Afsharid monarchy.
Koh-i-Noor: A large diamond of disputed early provenance that entered Iranian possession after Nader Shah’s Indian campaign. Its association with Nader’s plunder illustrates the lasting material legacy of his conquest.
Hotaki dynasty: An Afghan dynasty that ruled parts of Iran from 1709 to 1738 after overthrowing Safavid authority. Its invasion and occupation of Isfahan helped propel Nader’s rise.
Invasion of India by Nader Shah: Nader Shah’s 1738–1739 campaign into Mughal India, culminating in the sack of Delhi. Its plunder financed the empire but also marked the peak of Nader’s expansion.
