Knowra Agent Orange Agent Orange Agent Orange was a herbicide and defoliant mixture used by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War. Its contamination with TCDD, a highly toxic dioxin, caused lasting health and environmental harm.
2,4-D : A synthetic herbicide that disrupts plant growth and is used to control broadleaf weeds. One of Agent Orange’s two herbicidal ingredients, it contributed to rapid defoliation.
Operation Ranch Hand : A U.S. Air Force program that sprayed herbicides over South Vietnam from 1962 to 1971. This operation was the principal U.S. campaign that deployed Agent Orange.
Dioxin : A family of chemical compounds, some of which are persistent environmental pollutants and highly toxic. TCDD is a dioxin, linking Agent Orange contamination to a wider class of pollutants.
Mechanical defoliation : The removal of leaves or vegetation using physical methods such as cutting or mowing. Unlike Agent Orange, it removes vegetation without applying a persistent herbicide mixture.
2,4,5-T : A synthetic herbicide formerly used to control broadleaf plants and woody vegetation. This ingredient was manufactured in ways that could contaminate Agent Orange with TCDD.
Vietnam War : A conflict from 1955 to 1975 involving North Vietnam, South Vietnam, and foreign forces. The war’s counterinsurgency strategy created the military setting for herbicide spraying.
Birth defect : A structural or functional abnormality present at birth and arising during prenatal development. Exposure concerns have included possible effects on pregnancies and children of exposed people.
Napalm : An incendiary gel used in weapons that adheres to surfaces and burns intensely. It was another U.S. weapon used in Vietnam, but destroyed targets through fire rather than herbicide action.
TCDD : 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, a persistent toxic contaminant and potent aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonist. TCDD contamination, rather than the intended herbicidal action, drove many long-term health concerns.
United States Air Force : The aerial warfare service branch of the United States military. Its aircraft conducted much of the large-scale herbicide spraying in Vietnam.
