Agricultural machinery

Agricultural machinery comprises machines and equipment used to prepare land, plant and tend crops, manage livestock, and harvest or process farm products.

Tractor: A powered vehicle designed to pull or operate agricultural implements. Its engine and power take-off drive or tow many field implements.
Internal combustion engine: An engine that produces power by burning fuel inside its cylinders or combustion chambers. Diesel engines have powered most mobile farm machinery for generations.
Irrigation: The deliberate application of water to land or crops to support growth. Pumps and distribution equipment deliver water where rainfall is insufficient.
Mechanical reaper: A machine that cuts standing grain crops mechanically. Its nineteenth-century adoption made harvesting far faster than hand cutting.
Plough: A soil-working implement that cuts, lifts, and turns furrows. It shows how tillage machinery breaks and turns soil before planting.
Hydraulic machinery: Equipment that transmits force through pressurized liquid. Hydraulics lift implements and operate steering, brakes, and machine controls.
Center-pivot irrigation: A sprinkler system mounted on wheeled spans that rotate around a central water source. It is a widely used mechanized method for irrigating large fields.
Cyrus McCormick: An American inventor and industrialist associated with the commercial development of the mechanical reaper. His reaper helped establish the commercial market for harvesting machinery.
Seed drill: A machine that places seeds in soil at controlled spacing and depth. It converts planting into a measured operation rather than scattering seed by hand.
Agricultural implement: A tool or attachment used to perform a specific farming operation. Many machines are tractors paired with implements suited to particular tasks.
