Agricultural surplus

Agricultural surplus is food produced beyond immediate consumption and other immediate needs, making it available for storage, exchange, taxation, or redistribution.

Food storage: The preservation of food for use after its harvest or production. Stored surplus can buffer communities against seasonal shortages and failed harvests.
Subsistence agriculture: Farming primarily intended to provide food for the farmer's household or local community. It contrasts with production that regularly exceeds immediate household needs.
Neolithic Revolution: The transition in several world regions from foraging to farming and settled life. Agriculture created conditions for harvests that could exceed immediate needs.
Agricultural market: A system through which agricultural products are bought and sold. Markets move surplus from producers to buyers and connect harvests with demand.
Division of labor: The organization of work in which people specialize in different tasks. Reliable food beyond subsistence can free some people to do non-farming work.
Crop yield: The amount of crop harvested per unit of land or other input. Higher yields can create surplus when production outpaces consumption and losses.
Fertile Crescent: A region of Southwest Asia where some of the earliest farming societies developed. Early cultivation and grain storage in this region helped establish settled food production.
Food security: Reliable access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food for an active, healthy life. Surplus contributes to food security only when people can access and afford it.
Urbanization: The growth of towns and cities and the increasing concentration of people in them. Surplus can provision populations too large to grow their own food.
Granary: A building or facility used to store grain. Granaries preserve harvests and make grain reserves easier to manage or redistribute.
