Ahilyabai Holkar

Ahilyabai Holkar (1725–1795) ruled the Malwa kingdom from 1767 to 1795. She is remembered for effective administration and for sponsoring temples, pilgrimage sites, roads, wells, and other public works.

Malhar Rao Holkar: A Maratha commander who founded the Holkar dynasty and ruled Malwa before his daughter-in-law Ahilyabai. Her father-in-law introduced her to the Holkar court and supported her political education.
Maheshwar: A town on the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh, known for its temples, ghats, and handwoven textiles. Ahilyabai made it her capital and built its riverfront into a center of rule and worship.
Maratha succession crisis: A series of struggles over leadership and authority within the Maratha polity after Peshwa Madhavrao I’s death in 1772. Her dealings with Maratha power brokers tested the autonomy of her Malwa government.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple: A Hindu temple in Varanasi dedicated to Shiva as Vishwanath, or Lord of the Universe. Ahilyabai rebuilt the temple in 1780, restoring a major pilgrimage site.
Holkar dynasty: A Maratha ruling house that governed Indore and surrounding territories from the eighteenth century. Ahilyabai ruled as the dynasty’s sovereign after the deaths of her husband and father-in-law.
Hindu pilgrimage: Religious journeys to sacred places that form a major practice in Hindu traditions. Her support for temples and facilities helped sustain pilgrimage routes and destinations.
Tukoji Rao Holkar: A military commander and adopted successor of Malhar Rao Holkar who served under Ahilyabai. He led Holkar forces while Ahilyabai governed Malwa.
Somnath Temple: A Hindu temple in Gujarat dedicated to Shiva, repeatedly rebuilt after destruction and damage. Ahilyabai sponsored a temple near the historic Somnath site in the eighteenth century.
