Ahl al-Hadith

Ahl al-Hadith was a movement among early Muslim scholars that gave priority to the Qur’an and transmitted reports from the Prophet and his Companions in law and theology.

Hadith: Reports describing the sayings, actions, and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad. These transmitted reports were the movement’s defining authority alongside the Qur’an.
Ahl al-Ra’y: A tendency in early Islamic jurisprudence that made extensive use of reasoning and legal judgment. Its greater reliance on juristic reasoning marked a major contrast with Ahl al-Hadith’s report-centered approach.
Ahmad ibn Hanbal: A ninth-century Muslim scholar and jurist associated with hadith scholarship and the Hanbali tradition. His scholarship and resistance during the Mihna made him a lasting emblem of Ahl al-Hadith.
Mihna: A ninth-century Abbasid inquisition that tested scholars on the createdness of the Qur’an. Ahmad ibn Hanbal’s refusal to conform made the Mihna central to later memories of Ahl al-Hadith.
Sunni Islam: The largest branch of Islam, grounded in the Qur’an, the Prophet’s Sunnah, and communal scholarly traditions. Ahl al-Hadith helped shape Sunni ideas about authoritative sources and acceptable belief.
Sunnah: The normative example and practice associated with the Prophet Muhammad. Ahl al-Hadith treated reports of the Prophet as evidence for recovering the Sunnah.
Qiyas: Analogical reasoning used to extend a legal ruling from an established case to a new one. Debates over analogy exposed disagreements about how far juristic reasoning could go beyond transmitted evidence.
Al-Shafi‘i: An eighth- and ninth-century Muslim jurist who systematized legal theory and the authority of prophetic reports. His legal theory helped articulate how hadith could ground Islamic jurisprudence.
Abbasid Caliphate: A caliphate that ruled much of the Islamic world from 750 to 1258. The movement’s formative scholarly disputes unfolded under Abbasid rule and patronage.
Hanbali jurisprudence: The legal tradition associated with Ahmad ibn Hanbal and the Hanbali school. Its preference for transmitted evidence preserves a prominent institutional legacy of the movement.
