Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah

Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was ruler of Kuwait from 1921 until his death in 1950. His reign saw the discovery of oil and the start of commercial production.

Burgan oil field: A large oil field in southeastern Kuwait, discovered in 1938 and brought into production after World War II. Its discovery in 1938 began the oil era during Ahmad’s reign.
Jaber II Al-Sabah: Ruler of Kuwait from 1915 to 1917 and Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah’s father. Ahmad was Jaber II’s son and succeeded his uncle Salim.
Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah: Ruler of Kuwait from 1950 to 1965, succeeding Ahmad and leading the country to independence. He followed Ahmad as ruler and presided over the transition to independence.
Battle of Jahra: A 1920 battle near Kuwait in which Kuwaiti forces repelled an attack by Ikhwan fighters. It occurred shortly before Ahmad’s accession and shaped Kuwait’s security concerns.
Kuwait Oil Company: An oil company founded in 1934 by the Anglo-Persian Oil Company and Gulf Oil to explore for and produce oil in Kuwait. It secured the concession that led to Kuwait’s first commercial oil production.
Salim Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah: Ruler of Kuwait from 1917 to 1921, immediately before Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. His death in 1921 opened the succession that brought Ahmad to power.
Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah’s sons: The sons of Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, several of whom later held senior leadership roles in Kuwait. His family remained central to Kuwait’s succession after his death.
Uqair Protocol: A 1922 agreement that established boundaries between Iraq, Kuwait, and Najd, while creating a neutral zone between Kuwait and Najd. It fixed Kuwait’s borders early in Ahmad’s reign.
Kuwait oil concession: The 1934 agreement granting the Kuwait Oil Company exclusive rights to explore for and produce oil in Kuwait. Ahmad signed the agreement that set the terms for foreign-led oil exploration.
Al-Sabah dynasty: The ruling family of Kuwait, whose members have held the country’s leadership since the eighteenth century. Ahmad’s authority came through this ruling house’s succession.
