Ahmad ibn Fadlan

Ahmad ibn Fadlan was a 10th-century Arab writer and diplomat whose account of an embassy to the Volga Bulgars describes its journey, local customs, and a Rus funeral.

Volga Bulgar embassy: A 921–922 Abbasid mission sent from Baghdad to the Volga Bulgar ruler Almış. Ibn Fadlan’s report is the principal surviving account of this diplomatic mission.
Abbasid Caliphate: A caliphate that ruled much of the Islamic world from 750 to 1258. The embassy was dispatched from Baghdad under Abbasid authority.
Volga trade route: A network of river and overland routes linking northern Europe with the Caspian and Islamic lands. The embassy followed routes shaped by the same commerce Ibn Fadlan observed.
Mashhad manuscript: The principal surviving manuscript witness to Ibn Fadlan’s account, preserved in Mashhad, Iran. Its rediscovery made the report’s full narrative accessible to modern scholarship.
Ibrahim ibn Yaqub: A 10th-century Andalusi Jewish traveler whose Arabic reports describe central and eastern Europe. His accounts offer a contemporary western perspective unlike Ibn Fadlan’s journey from Baghdad.
Rus ship burial: A funeral rite described by Ibn Fadlan in which a Rus chieftain’s body was burned aboard a ship. His account records the ceremony in unusually detailed eyewitness narration.
Al-Muqtadir: The Abbasid caliph who ruled from 908 to 932. His court sent the delegation whose journey Ibn Fadlan chronicled.
Radhanites: Jewish merchants described in medieval sources as trading across parts of Europe and Asia. Their long-distance commerce helps illuminate the wider trade networks surrounding the mission.
Aḥmad ibn Faḍlān wa-Risālatuhu: A study by Zeki Velidi Togan that identified and edited the Mashhad manuscript of Ibn Fadlan’s report. Togan’s work brought the manuscript to scholarly attention in the twentieth century.
Al-Masudi: A 10th-century Arab historian and geographer who wrote about the lands and peoples of the known world. His broad compilations contrast with Ibn Fadlan’s focused eyewitness travel narrative.
