Ahmad ibn Hanbal

Ahmad ibn Hanbal (780–855) was a Muslim jurist and theologian in Baghdad whose legal teachings became the basis of the Hanbali school of Sunni law.

Al-Shafi'i: Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi'i was a jurist whose legal theory influenced several Sunni schools. Ahmad studied with al-Shafi'i, whose approach to legal reasoning informed his scholarly formation.
Baghdad: Baghdad is a city on the Tigris River and the historic capital of Iraq. Ahmad studied and taught in the Abbasid capital, a center of legal and theological debate.

Al-Mutawakkil: Al-Mutawakkil was an Abbasid caliph who ruled from 847 to 861. His reversal of official support for the Mihna altered the political climate surrounding Ahmad.
Ahl al-Hadith: Ahl al-Hadith was a movement emphasizing transmitted reports in Islamic law and theology. Ahmad became one of its leading representatives in opposition to speculative theology.
