Ahmadou Ahidjo

Ahmadou Ahidjo was Cameroon’s first president, serving from 1960 to 1982. He led the country through independence, reunification, and the creation of a centralized one-party state.

Cameroon: A Central African country whose territory includes a coastal region, highlands, rainforest, and savanna. Ahidjo governed the country from independence through his resignation in 1982.
Cameroon National Union: The political party formed in 1966 by merging Cameroon’s principal governing parties under Ahidjo. It became the nationwide vehicle for Ahidjo’s one-party political system.
Garoua: A city in northern Cameroon and the capital of the North Region. Ahidjo was born there in 1924.
Ernest Ouandié: A Cameroonian nationalist and leader of the Union of the Peoples of Cameroon, executed in 1971. His insurgent opposition exposed the coercive side of Ahidjo’s consolidation of power.
Cameroonian independence: The end of French and British colonial rule over the territories that became Cameroon. Ahidjo became president when the formerly French-administered territory achieved independence in 1960.

John Ngu Foncha: A Cameroonian politician who led Southern Cameroons into union with the Republic of Cameroon in 1961. Foncha’s advocacy of federalism contrasted with Ahidjo’s later move to a unitary state.
Cameroon unification: The 1961 union of the Republic of Cameroon and Southern Cameroons in a federal state. Ahidjo negotiated the union and led the resulting Federal Republic of Cameroon.
United Republic of Cameroon: The name adopted by Cameroon in 1972 after a referendum replaced its federal system with a unitary state. Ahidjo sponsored the constitutional change that ended the federation.
