Ahmed Zewail

Ahmed Zewail (1946–2016) was an Egyptian-American chemist who pioneered femtochemistry by using ultrashort laser pulses to observe chemical reactions as they unfolded. He received the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Femtochemistry: The study of chemical reactions on femtosecond timescales, tracking molecular changes with ultrashort pulses of light. Zewail established this field by observing reactions with femtosecond laser pulses.
Damanhur: A city in Egypt’s Nile Delta and the birthplace of Ahmed Zewail. Zewail was born there in 1946 before pursuing chemistry in Egypt and abroad.
