Ahn Chang-ho

Ahn Chang-ho (1878–1938) was a Korean independence activist, educator, and nationalist who organized civic and political groups opposing Japanese colonial rule.

Syngman Rhee: A Korean nationalist who became the first president of South Korea after years of exile and political activity. Rhee worked with Ahn in Korean independence circles in the United States.
Korean National Association: A Korean immigrant organization founded in the United States in 1909 to coordinate community affairs and independence activism. Ahn helped establish this organization as a platform for Korean-American solidarity and advocacy.
Korean Empire: The Korean state that existed from 1897 until Japan annexed Korea in 1910. Ahn’s political work developed as the empire faced escalating Japanese control.
March First Movement: A nationwide Korean protest movement that began on March 1, 1919, demanding independence from Japanese rule. The mass uprising reflected the civic mobilization Ahn had long promoted.
Kim Gu: A Korean independence leader who headed the Korean Provisional Government during much of its exile. Kim Gu and Ahn belonged to the wider movement that organized resistance from exile.

Korean diaspora: Korean communities living outside the Korean Peninsula through migration, exile, and displacement. Ahn’s work connected diaspora communities to the independence struggle.
An Jung-geun: A Korean independence activist who assassinated Japanese statesman Itō Hirobumi in 1909. His direct-action strategy contrasted with Ahn’s emphasis on education and civic organization.
Heungsadan: A Korean civic organization founded in 1913 to cultivate leadership, integrity, and service among Koreans. Ahn founded it to develop the disciplined citizens he believed an independent nation required.
