Ahom Kingdom

A kingdom in the Brahmaputra Valley, founded in 1228 by the Ahom dynasty and annexed by the British in 1826. Its rulers built a durable state that adapted Tai-Ahom traditions to Assam’s political and cultural landscape.

Paik system: A system of compulsory public service in which adult male subjects were organized into rotating groups called paiks. Its labor and military obligations supplied the kingdom with workers and soldiers.
Sukaphaa: A Tai prince traditionally credited with founding the Ahom Kingdom in the Brahmaputra Valley in 1228. His arrival marks the beginning of the dynasty and kingdom’s recorded history.
Tai-Ahom language: A Tai language historically used by the Ahom people, now maintained chiefly for liturgical and scholarly purposes. It was the language of Ahom records and ritual before Assamese became dominant in court life.
Treaty of Yandabo: The 1826 treaty that ended the First Anglo-Burmese War and ceded Assam to the British East India Company. Its terms formalized the end of Ahom sovereignty and brought Assam under British control.

Tai peoples: A group of peoples speaking related languages and historically distributed across parts of Southeast and South Asia. The Ahoms’ Tai origins connect the kingdom to migrations and cultures beyond Assam.
Ahom religion: The traditional religious system of the Ahom people, centered on ancestor veneration and ritual specialists. Its practices persisted alongside Hindu traditions adopted by many Ahom rulers and subjects.
First Anglo-Burmese War: A war fought from 1824 to 1826 between the British East India Company and the Burmese Konbaung dynasty. Burmese occupation and the British campaign destabilized the final Ahom government.
Pratap Singha: An Ahom king who ruled from 1603 to 1641 and strengthened the kingdom’s administration and diplomacy. His government developed institutions that supported later Ahom resistance to the Mughals.
