Air pollution control

Air pollution control comprises technologies and practices that prevent, capture, or transform pollutants before they enter the atmosphere, or reduce emissions at their source.

Electrostatic precipitator: A device that charges airborne particles and collects them on oppositely charged surfaces. It removes fine particles from industrial exhaust using electrical forces.
Vehicle emissions control: Measures that reduce pollutants emitted by motor vehicles, including exhaust treatment and engine design. Vehicles combine engine-side measures with exhaust devices to limit emissions.
Particulate matter: A mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets suspended in air. Particle size and composition determine which collection methods can capture it.
Clean Air Act: A United States federal law that establishes programs to control air pollution and protect air quality. Its rules require controls and emission limits for many sources.
Baghouse: An industrial filtration system that passes gas through fabric bags to capture particles. Its filter media trap dust from exhaust streams before release.
Industrial air pollution control: Methods used to prevent or reduce air pollutant emissions from industrial processes and facilities. Industrial controls are selected to match each process’s exhaust and pollutants.
Nitrogen oxides: A group of reactive gases containing nitrogen and oxygen, produced mainly by high-temperature combustion. Combustion controls target these gases to limit smog and other harms.
Air quality standard: A regulatory limit on the concentration of a pollutant in ambient air. Ambient standards translate health and environmental goals into pollution-control obligations.
Scrubber: A device that removes gases or particles from an exhaust stream by contacting it with a liquid or solid sorbent. Scrubbers transfer selected pollutants from exhaust into a collection medium.
Power station: A facility that converts energy sources into electricity, often by operating turbines or generators. Power stations use controls for pollutants produced by fuel combustion.
