Air superiority fighter

An air superiority fighter is designed primarily to defeat opposing aircraft and establish control of the air. It prioritizes air-to-air performance over dedicated attack missions.

Air combat manoeuvring: The tactical positioning and maneuvering of aircraft during close-range air combat. Close-range maneuvering can determine whether a fighter gains a firing position or evades attack.
F-22 Raptor: A United States stealth fighter designed for air dominance and capable of multirole operations. It is a purpose-built example combining stealth, supercruise, and advanced air-to-air capability.
Multirole combat aircraft: A combat aircraft designed to perform several mission types, such as air combat and ground attack. Multirole designs balance air-to-air performance against broader mission requirements.
Air supremacy: A level of air control in which opposing air forces cannot effectively interfere with friendly operations. Air-superiority fighters can help turn local control into dominance across a theater.
Beyond-visual-range missile: An air-to-air missile designed to engage targets beyond the pilot’s visual range. Long-range missiles let fighters attack before opponents can be seen directly.
Sukhoi Su-27: A Soviet-designed long-range fighter developed to counter advanced Western fighters. Its range and maneuverability show a different design response to air-superiority requirements.
Interceptor aircraft: A fighter designed chiefly to rapidly reach and destroy approaching enemy aircraft. Interceptors emphasize response speed and defensive coverage more than sustained control of the air.
Air interdiction: Air operations that disrupt or destroy enemy forces and supplies before they reach the battlefield. Control of the air makes it safer to strike enemy movement beyond the immediate front.
Active electronically scanned array: A radar antenna composed of individually controlled transmit-and-receive modules. AESA radar can detect and track multiple airborne targets while supporting electronic countermeasures.
Mikoyan MiG-31: A Soviet-designed high-speed interceptor built to defend large areas against aircraft and cruise missiles. It illustrates how air control can depend on long-range interception rather than close maneuvering.
